A Surprise in the School Office

After my first hour class Monday, Puok High’s school director flagged me down.  He told me there was a bag that someone had left for me in the office while I was teaching.

I wasn’t expecting anything, so this surprised me.

I opened the bag to find lots of things including Oreos and Cheese Ritz Crackers from Japan.

The bag included a letter from an American woman, Cathy Seow, who I met through this blog.  She lives and works in Japan.  She and her husband were in Siem Reap for the annual Angkor Wat bike race.

I feel awful that we didn’t meet up.  She tried hard, but I wasn’t online all weekend.  So, Cathy dropped the bag of goodies off at Puok High.  I’m really sad I missed you Cathy!

The bag included clothes to donate to Coat Tamay.

The bag also included special Japanese papers to make origami.

Plus, Cathy left a few Vanity Fair magazines which my classes loved.  Unprompted, after seeing the caricature below in one of the magazines, one group of Seniors told me they thought presidential candidate Michele Bachmann seemed ugly and stupid.  (I didn’t disagree).

I’m constantly overwhelmed by generosity from family, friends, and my Cambodian neighbors.  Now, I’m also overwhelmed by the generosity of a stranger.  Thank you Cathy.  Karma’s going to be good to you.

WOW! You are definitely accomplishing your goal; many people’s lives are better because of YOU! You have touched SO many people, Travis!! BE PROUD, because WE ARE!!!!!
    Love you!

    • That’s nice of you to say Di, but mostly MY life is better because of you and everyone else who has been way too kind to me. It’s seriously overwhelming. I’m just trying to do my thing like everybody else.

Just a bit of randomness here — my associate’s sister is in Siem Reap visiting for a few weeks. If you run into a Libby Winstanley say hi from her brother Chris. Stranger things have happened. I am not sure Michele Bachmann is still a presidential candidate. If she is, she will say something incredibly stupid here shortly and get back on everyone’s radar. The Republican candidates are amazingly stupid this election. That is right — I said it — they are stupid. I think most Republicans find it hard to argue with that assessment.

    • Thanks for letting me know that Wildcat. I’ll be on the lookout now. If she’s going to be around a few weeks, I’ll probably run into her. Siem Reap is a tiny world. If anyone talks to her, tell her to call this number if she needs anything: +855 17994762.

And, yeah, the Republican candidates have given us a lot to laugh at and be embarrassed about. I’m getting a kick of Bachmann especially. It’s unbelievable to me that she was even able to be in the running for president.

Hey Travis – another Cathy. Sorry the two of you were not able to meet. That is so cool that she learned about you through the blog and then left the things for you. We got your postcard today. Hope you get that break soon and can enjoy some crab! Love, Kaki
