Spirit of Christmas Past: The Construction Zone

‘Spirit of Christmas Pastis a series of holiday memories that are keeping me warm this season.  As if I needed to be any warmer…

He was in over his head.  The instructions couldn’t have been more confusing.  The “2 hours to assemble” written in the manual was bullsh*t.

I was only 11 years old, but I could clearly read my dad’s face as he sat on my bedroom floor surrounded by hundreds of tiny pieces, “What the Hell was Santa thinking?!?”  Santa had delivered the latest Lego technology—a modern marvel—the battery-operated Legoland airport tram.

The first problem was that my bedroom was too small for this monster of a tram track.  It had two stations—a big one at the airport check-in counter and a smaller substation at the giant terminal.  The picture on the box showed smiling Lego men and women getting on and off that magnificent mode of transportation.

I couldn’t wait to be the controller of my very own major airport system.  There were two options for construction—the track could be circular or a figure-eight.  Being the demanding kid I was, I asked Dad to construct the more difficult figure-eight.

Three hours into construction it looked like an earthquake-wrecked mess.  Cuss words, sweat, and fatigue were required.  Dad and I were battered construction workers ready for strike.  And, so strike we did.

At day break, we had clearer minds.  By Noon on December 26, the figure-eight track looked like a figure-eight.  The tram moved like the wind—all on its own with the push of a button.

My tiny, yellow Lego people had their brown briefcases in their clamp hands.  Some got on the tram, others got off.  Some waited at the station.  Others checked their bags with the airline worker Lego lady.  Some were already sitting in their seats on my Lego Boeing 737.  The pilot’s yellow face smiled as he was cleared for takeoff.

But there was one problem: I couldn’t fit on that plane.  And, dammit, I wanted to fly too.

This blog made me smile like no other! Our Christmas memories are THE BEST!!! So thankful we have them!!!!! Can’t believe you have picture of the Lego Train!!!!! I can just see you and Dad in your Train room putting that together!!!! Definitely makes me think of all the time you and Dad worked on it!!!!! But in the end….. It was AWESOME! Our Christmases really were incredible! That all began with Papa, the King of Christmas! He enjoyed nothing more than seeing everyone open their presents that he had so carefully wrapped!!! I love that the traditions Mema and Papa started, live on!!!! Sure do love you Travis!!!!

    • Mom, I actually found that picture online, it’s not mine. And, we put that tram together in the house on Wood Castle. But, had we worked on it in the train room, it would’ve made a better story! I Miss you. Love you.

Great Christmas Memories. It was always a challenge on Xmas day putting gifts together, but we always got it done together. Borrowing that famous line from Christmas Vacation “I had a lot of help from Jack Danials” Love ya Dad

Happy memories are the best. Thanks for this post, as I shop for Rhett. He loves Legos. Last year he started his collections. Your mom and Diane told me about your and Tyson’s Lego collections. Christmas morning is my favorite day of the year. Santa still leaves a surprise for everyone at our house.
Make special memories this year with your host family. We will miss you.

Time spent together makes the best Christmas memories. Even if it includes a little cussin and drinkin.

I feel so lucky that we have such wonderful Christmas memories and traditions – and they will live on. We will especially miss you through the holidays, but maybe we will get to skype like last year. Papa was the king of Christmas and of putting things together. I know he and Mema often got to bed just before your Mom and I got them up as we were too excited to stay in bed! We love you! Kaki

I smiled all the way through this! I love how some of the smallest moments can live forever and make us so happy!
