That’s my bed. I’ve been sleeping under my Peace Corps towel/blanket this week. I’ve shut off the fan. I’ve closed the window. We’re going through the blizzard of 2011.
Yes, this week, night and morning temperatures have dropped to 66 degrees. Brrrrrr. It’s by far the coldest weather we’ve had since I’ve been here. I’ve even been wearing a jacket to school in the morning.
Temperatures in the 60s really rock our world around here. Every day at school this week, the first thing teachers and students ask is, “Are you cold?”
My co-teacher Sondam asked me today (in English), “Have you blown the snots out of your nose?” He went on to tell me (in English) that if I need to get warm I should get a “flesh blanket“. When translated into Khmer “flesh blanket” is slang for “boyfriend or girlfriend”. They also say “meat blanket“. It’s a funny term in Khmer, but it’s even funnier when someone says it in English.
The weather has also inspired me to refrain from showering for several days. I just can’t find it in me to dump that freezing bucket of water over my head. Good thing I’ve got lots of deodorant.

It was 60 here yesterday too! My photographer set up our live shot on his t-shirt.
First of all, the picture of you in your coat is awesome!!!! Can’t believe you are actually getting to wear it! “Flesh Blanket” is such a great slang! Not so sure about the NO showering thing but a bucket of COLD water doesn’t sound very good either!!!! Stay warm! Love you!!!!
Wow! It was in the 60′s here yesterday, and the first day I did NOT wear a jacket in awhile!
I really cannot imagine taking those COLD showers!!! BRRRRR!!! And…..the “flesh blanket” is kinda funny!
Love you!
I think I’ll be laughing about flesh blankets for a while
I wear my fleece when it’s in the 60s here, too–including in my office! Oh, and just so you know, the first generation nanos are a part of a recall. Yours probably won’t die, but (if you can get it to them and they can get it to you) you have the opportunity to get a new one: http://www.apple.com/support/ipodnano_replacement/. Friendly neighborhood PSA. Stay warm and listen to those Christmas tunes around your Charlie Brown tree!
That’s so funny. “Flesh blanket”. I bet it would be easy to find. However 60 sounds good right now. It would be amazing to see green all year. The landscape looks so lush in your photos. I love it. Think warm.
You missed the cold weather and now your wish has come true. Enjoy it while it lasts! Freezing here in Japan (mid 40′s).
I was having computer problems after returning from Siem Reap–but now it’s fine
and I read your blog. Thanks for the posting! I wanted to tell you that we checked out Puok market which was great. Our tuk tuk driver told us that the roast chicken is famous so we bought half a chicken and it was delicious. (it’s not turkey but looks like you could easily set up a Christmas dinner) We also picked some of is notthose banana coconut rice sweets wrapped in leaves–those are so good.
It was 70 here yesterday, but much colder today. My office rarely gets warm, so I finely broke down and bought a little electric heater. It is great! I would share it with you if I could. Your jacket looks really warm. I am glad you have it to wear! I think the flesh blanket is pretty funny, too. Hope it warms up soon! Love, Kaki
It’s -1°F in my part of China, but we have heat.
