Part of the Peace Corps gig is to share your culture with those you live with. As you know, my host family has shared a lot of their culture and traditions. So, I shared Christmas with the students who study in the evening English class at my house. I made do with some of the many things you’ve sent me over the past 17 months.
Our Christmas English lesson focused on the reason for the season: Consumerism. I told them each to look through a magazine, select something they’d like to have, and prepare a paragraph in English telling me why.
One laughed as she told me she wanted this armpit hair.
Another student told me he wanted this pizza.
I brought some fried rice snacks and gave them some gifts—lotion, books, small bunny rabbits, glow sticks, and breath mints.
Later in the week, during the following class period, two students brought me gifts—an Angkor Wat t-shirt, a scarf, and a jar of origami stars made from Angry Birds. I was honestly surprised and so happy.

That is hilarious about the armpit hair!!! I do like that t-shirt and scarf! I think what you are doing to teach your students is wonderful! They are so lucky to have you as a teacher!
