These days walking through the campus of Puok High School is a bit of a challenge. You have to watch your step and take the long way to classrooms. There’s construction everywhere.
The walkways to classrooms have always been dirt. But that’s changing by the minute.
Concrete sidewalks are now being put in place.

And, we’re only weeks away from opening a brand new computer lab with 20 spankin’ new computers. This is perfect timing because this year the computer class is free to all students for the first time.
Our current lab has 15 very used, out-dated computers. We still won’t have internet in the new lab. But, the best part, the whole operation will be powered by newly installed solar panels.

On top of all this, the bell to begin and end class sounds different as of two months ago.
The old bell required students to use their hands to bang a metal baton against it.
The new bell is electric and controlled with a button!
Needless to say, students are pumped about all these changes, which also include other beautification projects. Kids don’t hesitate to pitch in and help, even when it means getting their hands dirty.

How exciting, Travis! The changes look great! I think it is so cool that the students are willing to help. That shows their excitement and gratitude!
Travis, who is funding this? -Jill Preston
Hey Jill. The school is funding the paved walkways, bell and beautification projects. That money comes from the rent the sellers behind the school have to pay, the fee students have to pay to park their bikes daily (200 riel) and from the Ministry in Siem Reap (which I’m told provides 12,000 riel per student per year to the school).
The computer lab is funded by KAP (which is somehow related to USAID).
The old bell sounds fun. Most of my students would of loved the chance to be the bell ringer.
You give a lot of examples of progress in the country. It must be wonderful to see. The people work hard and are very deserving. Even the children are eager to work for progress. You are part of something great.
Eager to hear more.
